demo     David Thomas Broughton : unreleased 3-track EP (UK,2006)***°

I was surprised at first to hear how much David’s voice and singing reminded me of early John Martyn. “Anchovies” has the same emotionality qualities but still is a different sort of inspiration. It is a leave-town/poor-man blues song, which end up in a melancholic outro of loops of voices from the original song. Also “The window” is multilayered in a similar way, like a departure folkblues song standing on the edge of a railway; it could have been something like a harbour folk song, driven by the blues of it. “Liberazione” is a gospel-like complaint with various “dobadou” background voices, as emotionally driven (in voice) as Anthony & The Johnsons. Gifted.
Acuarella Discos    David Thomas Broughton vs. 7 Hertz (UK,2007)***°

No doubt that David Thomas Broughton’s distinguished unique voice (labelled as a cross between Odetta and Tim Buckley, -I added early John Martyn-) you will remember, once you've heard it. There’s an emotional richness in it, like a kind of hidden personal gospel message. He also has his own method of song building, making somewhere some loop-kind of emotional mediation condition whereon to improvise further into the mood, slowly, limited in chords, falling apart into sounds only. Leeds group 7 Hertz participated in his last release, improvising slowly along with their chamber orchestra, often a jazzy upright bass, keeping the endless openness moment in mind, where more guitar ideas come in, or distortions or effects continue the spheres like stretched outros. Last over 14 minutes track adds a few rhythmic block sounds to it, and the whole band becomes like a majestic slow submarine moving into waters, then falling apart into sonic sounds only. A nice snapshot of a concert. One very small track was an improvised more funny song, brought in like a little, fitting inside joke.

Locally (near where I live, in Antwerp) they sold this 5-track but over 60 minutes digipack new for only 7 euros and a bit.

Plug Research David Thomas Broughton : The Complete Guide To Insufficiency (UK,2005)****'

This album, dedicated to John Peel is recorded in one take in Wrangton Church hall, and I guess should also give an idea of how a live performance of David could sound. I confirm once more the similarity with John Martyn's qualities. There comes to it that after each song, there are long a guitar improvisations with rhythmic clicks, with the voice adding dreamy mood humming, loop like, with some additional recorded sounds. Each track flows into the next one, as one story and expression in different sections and different density. Recommended.
