Joshua Marcus : Make / Believe (US,2007)****
When in using the specific “American” accent in the voice, by singing it, with feeling, like a voice instrument, it directs almost automatically in the direction of (alt) Americana or (alt) country. And what could sound better with it, in a contemporary, inspired form, than dual vocal harmonies (male or female as second voice), banjo pickings, and a finishing touch with double bass ? Joshua gives me the feeling that even when living in any small town in the country area, it is worth being there, especially when you really use your eyes and concentration and pay attention to what matters. This kind of attention can be shown in contemplative moments and songs like Joshua’s that give warmth and comfort to the soul. Contemplation instead of chasing ghosts. Joshuas voice reflects some emotional variations from slightly mourning, of being with constructive frustration, or being consciously discovering which moments to share, to share during rocking rhythms of pickings and with a vocal harmonies’ social presence. Or it can be a voice from the silence speaking loud out. The album's start is great with a storm in the background…
