Refree : Els Invertebrats (SP,2007)****
This is song driven music, which is equally strong and warm with just voice and solo jazzy upright bass or solo piano, but is accompanied most often with more instruments (additional piano, or Rhodes, bits of electronica and glockenspiel, drums, violin, harmonica,..). Refree’s warm voice is somewhat comparable to some late 60s/early 70s Argentine examples I know of (like Spinetta from Almendra and Invisible), but in a more jazzy way, and also, more singer/song orientated. Tasteful music, although I cannot understand the deeper meanings of the Spanish songs.
Refree is led by singer Raül Fernandez with co-composers and accompanied by Giovanni Di Domenico (piano), Manolo Cabras (upright bass), Oriol Roca (drums) (together they are the avant-garde jazz trio Sweet Cut). This is Refree’s fourth album, recorded in 5 days in Brussels. It is supposed to be a collection of portraits.
