Spider : The Way to Bitter Lake -mini CD- (US,2006)***'
Spider is Jane Herships, a young girl with some early experiences on self-liberating situations (musics, lifestyle) within a protected area, now deliberately going for the bitter pill of Alice -in Wonderland-, with one eye with a thin one veil slightly obscuring reality. Guitar is her main instrument (fingerpicking acoustic, strummed, with just a few electric touches) to accompany her songs. With the help of a few friends on some songs, her poetic ballads reveal certain dark thoughts and philosophy. Stylistically the music lies between dark folk singer-songwriter sung with a charming and bitter, hushed and whispering gentle voice, and has a touch of Americana on a few tracks, but always is definitely her own independent sound. (The last more electric distorted guitar, exactly played on the vocal melody is a bit an easy ending, like a stand up salute, forgivable but confusing as an almost overemphasized “End Song”). A promising debut.
