Headless Heroes : The Silence of Love (US,2008)****
Instead of looking for new songs, it isn’t really such a bad idea to express cover songs as long as the choice is made that the new interpreters feel related to these older expressions. Then the new versions come over well. Obviously this band with Alela Diane as a front singer compiled songs in such a way and they succeeded to bring them all with their own sound. Bringing a collection of old songs could also bring in a feeling of nostalgia, certain sadness. Often beautiful songs are sad ones too. Headless Heroes' musical approach is like a rocking chair, humming and droning slightly with echo, repeating rhythmical accompanying themes on acoustic and electric guitars and piano, with touching zither strings, and with an occasional trumpet arrangement, and to complete the nostalgic picture with beauty even some multiplied strings on a few tracks, bringing back really these old times. Above all it is Alela Diane who leads us through these songs of which some were and in these versions still remain of endless beauty ; especially “Hey, who really cares?” (Linda Perhacs) is such a moment.
