privateRose Turtle Ertler : Ladybirds of Crick Creek -wonky folk ukulele- (AUS,2006)***°

Different from all ukulele players I have heard before, Rose Turtle Ertler makes serious singer-songwriter inspirations with it, while the instrument is played, more delicately or even experimenting with its sound and variation (she plays soprano and baritone ukulele), with an attention that takes the instrument seriously and not as a fun and entertainment musical instrument. Roz Jones adds a bit of trombone on two tracks, Steve Fraser adds bass on two other tracks and drums on one of them. Other instruments she uses here and there are theremin (used for odd overtone texturing sounds, the same way she used a whistling sound somewhere), piano and banjo, and a few occasional fun spot sounds for attentive listeners (like contributions from her dog, who has a more clear appearance on the last track). Her vocal inspiration comes close to Veda Hille. She seeks her inspiration in the symbolic innocence of a merry “ladybird”, flying freely in the air.

Rose is a member of MUK (Melbourne Ukulele Kollective) and is also the organizer of Ukulele Land - an annual ukulele event in Sydney. She also has composed numerous soundtracks for theatre companies as well as European groups Antagon Aktion Theater (Germany) and Branch Nebula (Belgium).

Atone Rec.    Kelli Shay Hicks : Bucked -EP- (US,2006)****

This big girlish gentle voice, with a calmed down attitude, she sings these three open air and conscious songs, with sweet finger picking guitar, with backgrounds like traffic and birds that seems to be transformed through her singing and sound now like humming, peaking to her appearance in the sunshine, leaning out the window, making her songs turn light in gold.

Atone/Carbon Rec.    Kelli Shay Hicks : Buck Again (US,2007)****

Kelli’s first full release was recorded in Chicago and has also Butchy Fuego (drumer for the band Pit Er Pat) on percussion and piano and to help on the recording. There has also been a bit of bass guitar I think, and a few other instruments here and there texturing the sound, and two tracks on autoharp. I guess this is recorded with some sparse multi-tracking. The songs reveal conscious singing and emotions, although they do not always directly reveal their content, I more have the tendency to dream away with it, on the nice melancholic picking guitar, which slowly moves from theme to theme, the gentle vocals, and the sparse arrangements. Something for many many listens.

Kelli Shay Hicks, has played before with people like Jana Hunter, Michael Hurley, Marissa Nadler, Otto Hauser, The Cherry Blossoms, Nora Keyes, Deanna Veragona (Lambchop), and Tom Brosseau.

North East Indie RecMicah Blue Smaldone : Live From Belgium -EP- (US,2007)***'

While the first album from Micah Blue Smalldone reminded me much of old time music with banjo or ukulele, this sounds different. “Untitled” starts much more a slow Fahey-like guitar improvisation, before the song appears. “Coal Black Crepe” is a semi-bluesy moody guitar excursion, but in a slowed down ragtime style, following a song closely and nicely. Third track sounds more like ot is played on banjo again, but I cannot tell for sure what instrument this is (perhaps a much smaller guitar with a more rough, dry and banjo-like sound). Last track is sung acapella. Luckily the public was quiet. A nice moody collection. The sound is different also maybe because the speed of singing was slowed down creating keeping tension in the mood.

Collectif EffervescenceMy Name Is Nobody :
I hope you're well, I am and I send you my fingers (F,2006)****

On the first track, one of my favourites, the colour of the voice reminded me a bit of Robert Wyatt, not sure if the reference is exploited just slightly as an influence too. We could add much more Bonnie “Prince” Billie as a reference into the, darkening emotional tension of the songwriting. Not all songs were immediately clear from first listen (I didn’t have the lyrics), but I assume are mostly about love and friendships. They are either accompanied a bit more sparsely, by guitars, piano and a bit of vocal harmonies, and elsewhere by stronger emphasized band arrangements. Contrary to the dark and overdone dark-cynically front cover, the songs often here and there sound lighter and hopeful against a more poisonous darkness.

-This drawing on the cover, feels like a cynical caricature, an exaggerated expression of disappointment, of someone sending his fingers, possibly referring to Van Gogh who people remember as having sent his ear to the girl he loved, when he felt abused in the situation. -Here I must say that I am sure that this story about Van Gogh was always misinterpreted. I guess he send only his ear-lob, which is a more sexually strong point of the body, a part which was possibly liked so much by the girl, where she had said some things about it, as if this dealt with love and caring, so when he felt betrayed, he decided to send the real "detail" she loved dearly over, a story which makes very much sense, while someone sending his ear sounds much more crazy, just like sending fingers (and this by someone who plays guitar) as much more sick, self-destructive and narcistic, although it is probably just a shocking image, in a 21st century fashion of uncontrolled image-exaggeration, de-attached from the reality behind it, so in this case just like a symbolic wish for a real goodbye of any cooperation, as a reference to the "Palace" scene with hip exaggerations-

The name My Name Is Nobody refers to Jim Jarmuschs “Dead Man”, and is led by singer-songwriter Vincent Dupas.

Abaton BooksW-S Burn : Peek-A-Boo -EP- (US,2007)**

This recording sounds like an art exhibition or a contemporary stage theatre improvisation, with sitting-on-air-bags jummps of harmonium, double layered song improvisations, with a wind-like droning sound, going on for ever and ever, like lonely cries in dark skies, with vague, slightly blurring together harmonies of acidic ethereal expressions penetrating into the desolation of this self-enclosing landscape.

Hard Graft Rec.   Pat Whelan : Standup -EP- (UK,2007)***°

This is a strong, professionally produced debut, with gentle and warm band arrangements. I like very much how on “With this bullet” some string arrangements comes in like a snake on the rhythmic pulses of the song, while Pat is strumming the guitar and singing the song along. “Waterford Chrystal” starts with church organ, before letting acoustic guitar and slide guitar and voice make the lead direction, keeping alive a controlled dramatic tension. The last, most simple track, “Down the backroads” uses more pop/country attractive rhythms stirring the song, while keeping it convincing and musically inspired.

Dutro/Jnana Rec.   Michael Cashmore : The Snow Abides -EP- (UK,2007)****

Michael Cashmore is a long time collaborator of Current 93 since the '80s, responsible for most guitar work since '90s after the departure of Douglas Pearce. He had some solo projects before, between 1994 and 1998, under the name 'Nature and Organisation', and since last year, 2006, under his own name with a full CD, and now this year, with an EP.
The recordings compromise earlier recorded tracks from 1991-2001, are with Anthony on vocals, and with lyrics from David Tibet.
It is an almost classical composition in instrumental and song sections, while the mood-making minimal piano introduces or accompanies the song themes. Here you have Anthony at his best. The last piano piece almost made a loose ending, but with an extra arrangement still made a good conclusion. A memorable CD.

Domino Rec. James Yorkston : The Year of the Leopard (UK,2006)***'

Sometimes it is strange how some of these new singer-songwriters items show gentle styles, and perfectionism, without that one song coming through out of the whispery blue (feeling). “Let’s talk about things” does not reveal as much compared to transcendent poetry, and sounds so sad and gripless on all the facts, in need, in charge, in accessing it so directly, loosing it as much as there is talked about.. Most tracks are accompanied by acoustic guitars, piano and percussion, and extra acoustic arrangements. “Woozy With Cider” stylistically goes a bit in the direction of Piano Magic, spoken word and soft electronica with acoustic flavours. "Don't let me down", the most sad song of all has a nice string arrangement. With that feeling of tired dissatisfaction, somehow the album still succeeds, with a perfect production by Paul Webb (which was Talk Talk's bass player) -under the name of Rustin Man-, to show a balanced beauty. This is already the third album from this former Fence Collective musician.

Drift Rec.Birdengine : I Fed Thee Rabbit Water -mini-cd- (UK,2007)****

Birdengine is Lawry Joseph Tilbury’s musical project, and this is a mini-CD release after a previous EP. I really had to listen a lot of times to this dreamy Birdengine album, suitable to fly away into thoughts and for daydreaming, before being able to take a writer’s distance. Lawry did a remarkable job with his 4-track recordings. He sings most often with himself in close harmonies or with different voices, from melancholic to wordless musings intertwined with the lyric parts, to musical theatre, with velvet curtain, once or twice with a telephone like voice, and with birds whistling in the background. Also two guitars (banjo somewhere as well ?) drift well with open tunings and with some changing directions as if walking through a labyrinth garden, noticing local life, but singing about the whole range of surrounding space.
