Cosmos Rec. V.A. : We Are All Circling The Stars -2cd- (UK/IR/US,2007)****

This is one of the best song-compilations I have heard in a very long time. Perhaps it is the taste of the compilers, and it might also be because likeminded souls look for each other, and gravitate towards each other. First of all, there are many honest gentle souls, a category which I prefer to attract as well on my singer-songwriter pages (just like on the psychfolk related pages). Further on there are some collection of bands who have some post-late 60s psychpop association. This leaves us with a handful of bands and singer-songwriters who create an independent sound somewhat in between both categories and float freely and with ease between both these magnets. All of it is far above the average or just sounds very nice like it is. The compilation is done with care and perfection, and it makes also a perfect listen, perhaps even a bit more than how a one group/band/person release would sound well. Very pleasant stuff which will introduce the listener to major and minor important musical talents.

Helmet Room Rec. Bela Karoli : Furnished Rooms (US,2007)***°

This freshly new woman trio from Denver makes tastefully arranged songs that hold the middle between jazz, songwriting and subtle modern grooves. Also, there is some literary interest involved, where text inspirations are sung and are softly pushed to life and swing, in a manner as if spoken word comes to song, following and flooding on the musical groove, with a certain jazz-like emotionality, in a way they’re pushed into the swing in sections of words with pauses, while the musical background carries them further. The bass holds the middle between the modern groove (by repetition) and jazz, while soft electronica and just once and a while keyboards and hand percussive elements replace any drums with more subtle but very present grooves (there are no drums). Cello and violin, sometimes harmonica, work in between the voice and the bass and rhythms, are a more free, more improvised, partly arranged part that is a bit more chamber-music like. Also listed is a very original version of Gershwin’s “Summertime” which sounds so new as if it is mixed with some kind of bluesy or gospel song idea, it is also arranged with the more typical grooves and chamber arrangements from the group than they felt obliged to deal with each detail of the original. Tasty affected music this is, sure.

Julie Davis plays upright bass, vocals, soft instruments, Brigid McAuliffe plays accordion and sings (also with vocal arrangements), and Carrie Beeder plays violin and cello. All musicians added several multi-tracking ideas.

preview copy     Allysen Callery : Hopey (US,2007)****

The first song I heard from Allysen Callery was “Pea Green Boat”. I thought it was produced wonderfully with its subtle sound arrangements. Allysen explained to me that this was the splendid work of Myles Baer (of Black Hole Sound Studios), who also produced Marissa Nadler on her first album amongst other people. Allysen confirmed “he has the ability to see inside one's secret heart & do perfect production! He used Hammond organ and theremin on “Pea Green Boat”. For me it seems like he reinvented a perfect environment for the song. She explained to me there are also Peeptoads (!) tree toads on a couple tracks, in the background, as she had been recorded some of the time in a glass studio, in the woods (I assume this is on the “Feathercap” track). On “Slo Slo-Mo” I also hear some subtle slide guitar touches. Most songs are just with well played fingerpicking guitar, and are sung with a nicely sounding voice. The lyrics are conscious with gentle analyses of the environmental appearances and reactions of people, also on stage, or recalling moments to remember within a love affair, to nourish with caring remembrance under the form as songs, or more likely as things she wanted to tell, but couldn’t at the moment, and that made it to songs.

Bluesanct    Caethua : Village Of The Damned (US,2007)***°

Bluesanct label found in Caethua a likewise "poor soul" underground folk & experimental music talent in Caethua, and re-released her privately released project, to reach a bigger audience, as a home printed booklet, with CDR, while the pressings on her own label, Saxwand, will still remain available. I assume this is mostly a female led project of songs combined with additional soundscapes, that unfolds like abstract natural sounds, partly meditative with bowls and droning keyboards. On “Retreat” this sounds like as if objects that stand in a room with closed curtains so long so that they become so familiar and it becomes so as if they begin to speak with sounds, while Caethua sings in this environment, as the ghost, guides over their familiar stagnant and safe patterns. On “Playing dead” (I saw the title only after the previous description) the voice is much more alive over the dead, more playful, still behind curtains, while also guitars arrangements are added. “Meditation” uses Tibetan bells and keyboards, and is indeed a meditative soundtrack, rich in colours with sounds, an existence in a grey darkness and nature, as a naturally evolving soundscape. Also “they walk at night” with voice, bells, guitar and so on, forms thoroughly another kind of naturally pulsing soundtrack, sounding like industrial insects, until thoroughly a keyboard drones take it over, with slow waves and slightly buzzing sounds to it, like a combination of radiowaves of longer and shorter wavelength frequencies. After more musings with guitars and keyboards and hand and finger percussive inspirations in a room, “black water” concludes with a "woohoo.." singing, like the dog in the house who found as if through chanelling a human voice for its expressions….

Caethua explained to me afterwards : "The CD is about the village where I grew up called Dryden, where a long string of murders (dating back to when the village was founded) cursed the land. " Caethea also just released another recording on LP.

Language Of StoneOrion Rigel Dommisse : What I want from you is sweet (US,2007)****'

When I met Orion she had just participated with Greg Weeks latest album, and was touring with Marissa Nadler, while taking care of the backing vocals and organ arrangements. One year later, I was glad to hear she had the chance to prove her own voice, songs and taste for arrangements on a solo debut. And in her turn she received help from Greg Weeks on guitars, synths, bones and bell on 4 tracks, Margie Weink (Fern Knight, Eyesores,..) on cello, Jesse Sparhawk on harp, and Robert Pycior on electric violin and guitar on one track, while she played and arranged most of the songs (electric cello, Wurlitzer electric piano, Omnichord, synths, vibraphone, singing).

By staying a bit in the background, watching how some people belong there but in fact are in a constant social act of consuming with destructive effect to others, some other people just wants to belong there as the gentle finishing touch. Covered with darkness of its own fears and observations, the musical dance remains playful but sad, but like winter bird it manages to sing in beauty and style. Orion’s Rigel Dommise songs and arrangements are almost new-classical in arrangement, extremely rich in sounds and expression, while her voice sings like bird in the forest, who sings jumping from one bush and branch to the other. A masterpiece. Highly recommended !

Acuarella Discos      Refree : Els Invertebrats (SP,2007)****

This is song driven music, which is equally strong and warm with just voice and solo jazzy upright bass or solo piano, but is accompanied most often with more instruments (additional piano, or Rhodes, bits of electronica and glockenspiel, drums, violin, harmonica,..). Refree’s warm voice is somewhat comparable to some late 60s/early 70s Argentine examples I know of (like Spinetta from Almendra and Invisible), but in a more jazzy way, and also, more singer/song orientated. Tasteful music, although I cannot understand the deeper meanings of the Spanish songs.

Refree is led by singer Raül Fernandez with co-composers and accompanied by Giovanni Di Domenico (piano), Manolo Cabras (upright bass), Oriol Roca (drums) (together they are the avant-garde jazz trio Sweet Cut). This is Refree’s fourth album, recorded in 5 days in Brussels. It is supposed to be a collection of portraits.

FatCat Records      Silje Nes : Ames Room (N,2007)***'

Like the folktronica inspired groups, like Múm, Lau Nau, Adem, The Books and such, it is as if Nordic Silje Nesbrings brings another variation or a next chapter, which is a bit more song music than just a fantasy world, while she also has this suitable, sweet voice, cold skin, cheek-to-cheek, warm hearted in expressions, ornamented with tasteful arrangements, as if with a small band in a small room, with lots of warm guitars, bits of electronica and where in fact all instruments sound as warm as a Rhodes piano. Often these arrangements are carefully playful, like folktronic chamber music. They consist for instance of charming, computer-found (?) tiny little sounds that bubble like folktronic aquariums around the musical vocal humming arrangements. You can hear the addition of toy-like sounds, of softly clicking rhythms or drums, whistling keyboards, some electric bass, bits of kalimba, flute, glockenspiel, which in combination makes huge musical boxes. Very nice.

Gwymon      The Gentle Good : Dawel Disgyn -EP- (UK-WA,2007)***°

It is good to hear there’s more in its pipes of sensitive talented singer/songwriters than Meic Stevens in the 70s in this small area of Wales. This for me is a great promise that will be easily put in the waters of Nick Drakes and early John Martyns, with its distinctive Welsh folk touch, and inevitable influence of its nice and soft tongue language (2 songs of four are in English, the other two in Welsh). A thoughtful beautiful guitar style, bits of glockenspiel on the first track, string & violin touches on the second, and string arrangements on the other two tracks, combined with a beautiful and gentle soul voice, and a bit of second, female wordless airy touches on one track, with inspired songs makes this a perfect and recommended listen.

demo            Birds That Change Colour : -5-track demo- (B,2007)***

Birds That Change Colour is one of both projects (with Nepumuk Demonophon as the other moniker form), led by Koen Kohlbacher, an Antwerp musician who has now found a couple other musicians to bring his homemade stuff to the public (his first gig just happened in Trix, in Antwerp). The influence of solo Syd Barrett (without the madness or depression) is obvious on 2 tracks at least, with one track mixed with a bit of Devendra Banhart flavour (but not the hippie weirdness). Most songs are much happier, and are with sunshine, even in one of the blues songs this is more the happy thirties than the blues related with ex-slaves or lazy persons. This kind of, arranged songwriting surely has an interest from the late 60s in them (the psych periods), but is with his mind here in today, escaping just with his songs musically.... I look forward for the next chapter..
