Travelling MusicAndrew Sweeny : "Monotone" (CAN,2005)***°°

This is a singer-songerwriter item I prefered to listen to again and again. Each track is differently arranged, all perfectly suiting the song, mostly with piano and acoustic guitar combinations, but also with amplified guitar, and additional cello and one track with handpercussion. The piano/guitar combinations are melodically forming the compositions together, building up and adding the right touches to the song melody. A few songs are slightly melancholic, in a revealing way. The singing holds the middle between artists like Pat Orchard, Greg Weeks, Jamie Barnes, Great Lake Swimmers and in two tracks Leonard Cohen without pushing this. A beautiful, recommended album.

Private  Jasmine Star (US,2005?)***°°

Jasmine Star plays tampura and amplified guitar(s) and sings in whispery feathers. She never reveals her face on any of the pictures. I don’t have to add that this is intimate music, covered under leafs of creative protection, withdrawn from worldly visions, innocent and lovely. A bit less minimal compared to Diane Darby. The vision is shy, gentle and simple, but does not reveal all. It has something of poetry, like as when looking at a child’s personal vision of a play. At the same time its innocence of the childhood is like the best kept secret of a grown up girl, and it’s having its own strength. The guitars can create landscapes on the tampura drone, moody and receptive.

The music really grew on me with various listens. There's a kind of melancholic eternal beauty hidden here. The second guitars have Floydian touches. Recommended !

Beautiful eternal minimalism of suicidal songs.

Box Tree RecordsMarston : Redtail (US,2005)*°

“Marston” is called a cosmic-cowgirl. Although I now remember her earlier album for me was a disappointment, at least I can say she is much more straight forward here, in an alternative country rock style. The album is recorded by Ned Oldham (Palace Brothers) and has its own kind of evening country-ballad mood.

KrankyBoduf Songs (UK,rec.2004;reissue 2005)****

Only 30 cdr copies were made previously before the album was rediscovered by Kranky who has gladly reissued this wonderful album. The songs written with acoustic guitar, have a calm hypnotically concentrated inspiration, with a gloomy candle light warm effect, filling up the atmosphere. The songs more are like moody pastoral song paintings, played with spinning pickings and a few minimal effects (cymbal, stroked metal, reverbed fuzz guitar or acoustic guitar as a small background touch with also an environmental reverbed loop of an orchestra tuning). Recommended !

Spiderwoman Rec.Cynthia G. Mason (US,2000)***

With a (slightly breathy and conscious) voice colour comparable to for instance Veda Hille, the music of Cynthia G. Mason is (without as much musical experiment as Veda) lush indierock singersongwriter styled. First track, “Measure” has organ, Cocteau twins guitar vibrating strumming on background, guitar, bass and drums, and some additional glockenspiel, while “ ‘95” has violin and double bass or cello plucks and stringed arrangements, besides the acoustic slowly accompanying acoustic guitar. The other tracks vary between these kinds of arrangements, always convincing in bringing the song expression to the front with a good production creating a pleasing moody effect. A very fine album.

Spiderwoman Rec.Cynthia G. Mason : demo EP (US,2005)***'

The 5 track demo is somewhat more acoustically arranged but has similar qualities of expression. There’s some appearance of trumpet with double bass to the acoustic guitar.

Fatcat Rec.Tom Brosseau : Empty houses are lonely (US,2006)***°

Immediately the particular gospelblues voice aspect of Devendra Banhart's voice comes in mind when listening to the first track on Tom Brosseau’s album, “Fragile Mind”. The inspiration also has its own kind of personal fantasy, which reflects in its own personal kind of gospel-ode code. The music has no loose me-the--hippie-cleverness, but hangs together by different, lonely visions, with its own self-protected country-blues in the heart, (and perhaps the remembrance of old blues and country), with the love memory of a girl, and with an empty house as hishome. A lovely album.

Fatcat Rec.Drowsy : Snow on moss on stone (FIN,2006)***'

Just a few songs, like “Bakery” & “Treehouse”-, with guitar/bass and voice, Drowsy expresses a Syd Barrett-solo kind of simplicity with a straight forward acoustic “rock” effect (so not like the depressed songs from Syd). Elsewhere there’s more picking and songs with retrospective calm visions, partly inspired by the Finnish environment and someone’s poetically expressed symbolic place in it. Two other tracks, like the post-psychpop rock “Good Old Odd Gold” and the calm piano outro “Plangent suite” are instrumentals. A few tracks have nice background spherical guitar and some percussion. A very nice, generally calm and moody album.

Another Rec.    Half Asleep : Palms and Plums (B,2003)**/***

I have heard a few records from Another Record, a small independent Belgian label. All releases were examples of very introverted creativity from which I think this one sounded the strongest to me. We hear some minimal melancholic piano, soft strummed guitar, some percussion, and whispery voice(s), in slow movements. Half asleep is the project from Valérie Leclercq, assisted by her younger sister, Oriane. A consistent, calm, introverted release.

Another Rec.    Dana Hilliot and his friends (playing and singing) :
I was a rabbit and I won ! (F,2004)**'

Dana Hilliot is an indiefolk singer/songwriter who gives attention to the arrangements on his collection of songs. The arrangements are somewhat sober, from multilayered minimal arrangements (as a combination of melodic repetitive pickings of acoustic guitar, electric guitar effects, percussion, piano) to just piano, or harmonica with acoustic guitar or guitars with flute. “His friends” who helped him are Valérie Leclerq (from Half Asleep), -clearly on piano-, Julian Angel, Clément Batut (from The Wedding Soundtrack), and Giles Deles (from Lunt).

demoEssie Jain : we made this ourselves (UK/US,2006)***°

Essie Jain delivers 10 precious songs with some calm small water of heartfelt quietly-emotion. I'm not too clear yet (not speaking English) what it's all about, showing only a small veil of which visions were actually seen and experienced and that are notified as in a diary. Her singing has all the potency needed. A number of tracks are accompanied by instruments other than piano, like cello. The crystal melancholy in some songs is very beautiful. "Cardboard" has very nice dubbed additional vocals. Another favourite is "Glory"...

demo    David Thomas Broughton : unreleased 3-track EP (UK,2006)***°

I was surprised at first to hear how much David’s voice and singing reminded me of early John Martyn. “Anchovies” has the same emotionality qualities but still is a different inspiration. It is a leave-town/poor-man blues song, which end up in a melancholic outro of loops of voices from the original song. Also “The window” is multilayered in a similar way, like a departure folkblues song standing on the edge of a railway; it could have been something like a harbour folk song. “Liberazione” is a gospel-like complaint with various “dobadou” background voices, as emotionally driven as Anthony & The Johnsons. Gifted.

Plug Research David Thomas Broughton : The Complete Guide To Insufficiency (UK,2005)****'

This album, dedicated to John Peel is recorded in one take in Wrangton Church hall, and I guess should also give an idea of how a live performance of David could sound. I confirm once more the similarity with John Martyn's qualities. There comes to it that after each song, there are long a guitar improvisations with rhythmic clicks, with the voice adding dreamy mood humming, loop like, with some additional recorded sounds. Each track flows into the next one, as one story and expression in different sections and different density. Recommended.

Acuarella Discos    David Thomas Broughton vs. 7 Hertz (UK,2007)***°

No doubt that David Thomas Broughton’s distinguished unique voice (labelled as a cross between Odetta and Tim Buckley, -I added early John Martyn-) you will remember, once you've heard it. There’s an emotional richness in it, like a kind of hidden personal gospel message. He also has his own method of song building, making somewhere some loop-kind of emotional mediation condition whereon to improvise further into the mood, slowly, limited in chords, falling apart into sounds only. Leeds group 7 Hertz participated in his last release, improvising slowly along with their chamber orchestra, often a jazzy upright bass, keeping the endless openness moment in mind, where more guitar ideas come in, or distortions or effects continue the spheres like stretched outros. Last over 14 minutes track adds a few rhythmic block sounds to it, and the whole band becomes like a majestic slow submarine moving into waters, then falling apart into sonic sounds only. A nice snapshot of a concert. One very small track was an improvised more funny song, brought in like a little, fitting inside joke.

Locally they sold this 5-track but over 60 minutes digipack new for only 7 euros and a bit.
